申請者面試（Alumni / AO）差異與準備：30 分鐘決勝負

每年 11 月，我接到的最焦慮家長訊息：「老師，Yale 寄了 alumni interview 邀請，我女兒明天就要見面——她該準備什麼？」

我的回答永遠是：「面試不是考試——不需要『準備答案』。Alumni 期待的是『和你認識』，不是『面試你』。準備的是『你想分享什麼故事』，不是『標準答案』。」

家長更焦慮：「但是英文不夠流利怎麼辦？」

答案是：Alumni 面試的目的是「評估你的真誠度與興趣」——不是「語言能力」。本文用我 15 年實戰，把美國申請面試的所有面向拆給你看。

一、4 種面試類型

二、Alumni Interview：80% 學校採用的形式

2.1 什麼是 Alumni Interview？

校友面試。多數 Ivy + Top 30 在 ED / RD 截止後邀請部分申請者進行 30-45 分鐘的非正式面談。

2.2 邀請收到後 24 小時內回覆

收到 alumni 邀請，24 小時內必須回覆——展現尊重 + 積極。

安全提醒：如果是 18 歲以下學生，家長可以陪同到場但坐隔壁桌——不要直接同桌。

三、Alumni Interview 的真實目的

許多家長以為 alumni 面試是「測試」——錯。Alumni 面試的真實目的：

1. 驗證 PS 真實性：你寫的故事是不是真的？你能不能講出細節？
2. 評估社交能力：你能不能進入 Yale 社群、和不同背景的人對話？
3. 檢查你對學校的真誠度：你為什麼想念這所學校？
4. 給 AO 第三方視角：Alumni 會寫 report 給 AO

3.1 Alumni Report 給 AO 寫什麼？

Alumni 面試後 1-2 週會寫一份 Interview Report 給 AO：

真相：Alumni 給「4-5 分 + Strongly Recommend Admit」對申請有實質加分；給「3 分 + Neutral」是中性；極少給負面 review（< 5% 申請者收到負面 report）。

四、20 個 Alumni 高頻問題（含應答策略）

4.1 開場類

Q1: Tell me about yourself.

❌ 錯：「I'm 18 years old, born in Taiwan, I love computer science...」（履歷式）
✓ 對：「My favorite hobby is exploring how machines learn human languages. I started programming at age 11 because I wanted to make a chatbot that could speak Taiwanese. That's still what I'm working on today—I'm building a Taiwanese speech recognition tool with a NTU lab.」

4.2 為什麼選這所學校

Q2: Why [School]?

❌ 錯：「Yale is one of the best universities in the world, and I want to study CS.」
✓ 對：「Yale's CS program emphasizes ethics—Professor X's class on AI Fairness is exactly what I want to study. Plus, I'd love to be at the intersection of CS and the Yale Repertory Theatre—I want to combine my interest in coding with my background in theater design.」

4.3 為什麼選這個主修

Q3: Why this major?

❌ 錯：「Because computer science has good job prospects.」
✓ 對：「In 10th grade, I helped my grandmother set up a video call to talk to relatives abroad. She couldn't understand the English interface. I realized then that technology assumes a level of language fluency many people don't have. So I started studying NLP—I want to build interfaces that adapt to the user's language background.」

4.4 學術深度類

Q4: What's your favorite subject in school?
Q5: Tell me about a project you've done.
Q6: What's a book / article / podcast that influenced you?

策略：每個答案都應該包含「具體名稱 + 具體洞察 + 引起好奇心」。

4.5 課外活動類

Q7: What do you do outside of class?
Q8: Tell me about your leadership experience.

策略：講具體故事，不是 generic「I learned leadership」。

4.6 挑戰 / 挫折類

Q9: What's the hardest thing you've faced?
Q10: Tell me about a failure.

策略：選一個有真實低谷但有 agency 的故事。避免：「我父母離婚 / 我家人過世」（太敏感且難以承接）。

4.7 興趣 / 個性類

Q11: What do you do for fun?
Q12: If you could solve any problem in the world, what would it be?
Q13: Who's your role model?

策略：真實答案 + 1 個具體細節。

4.8 學校匹配類

Q14: Where else are you applying?

注意：Alumni 不會懲罰你說申其他學校，但不要說「Yale 是我的 safety」——這代表你看不起 Yale。
對的答法：「I'm applying to about 12 schools, including [list 3-4 peer schools]. Yale is at the top of my list because of [specific reason].」

Q15: What if you don't get into [School]?

策略：「I'd be disappointed, but I'd reconsider what makes Yale special and apply that to wherever I end up. I'd still want to study CS in a similar environment.」

4.9 個人特質類

Q16: What's one weakness?

❌ 錯：「I'm a perfectionist.」（陳腔濫調）
✓ 對：「I sometimes overcommit—I'll join 3 projects at once and have to learn to say no. I'm working on it.」

Q17: Tell me something that's not on your application.

策略：分享一個你 application 沒寫到的小 quirky 故事。

4.10 你問面試官的問題

Q18-20: 反問面試官

❌ 錯問題：

• What's [School]'s SAT requirement?（Google 找得到）
• What's the acceptance rate?（Google 找得到）
• What's your job?（你應該已經查過 LinkedIn）

✓ 對問題：

• What's something about [School] that surprised you when you were a student?
• Looking back, what's one thing you wish you had done differently at [School]?
• What's the best class you took at [School]?
• How did your experience at [School] shape your career path?
• What's a tradition at [School] that you still think about?

五、台灣學生最常死的 5 個面試問題

5.1 「內心戲」不夠

台灣學生回答多半「結果導向」：「I won the math olympiad and learned a lot.」——AO / Alumni 想聽的是過程 + 內心想法。

✓ 對的版本：「I qualified for math olympiad in 11th grade. But before that, in 10th grade, I failed badly—I came in last in my school's selection test. I spent the next 6 months redoing fundamentals from scratch. When I finally got in, I realized the value wasn't the medal—it was the year of struggle that taught me how to actually learn.」

5.2 過度客套

❌ 「Thank you so much for taking the time to interview me. It's such an honor.」（每句話都這樣）
✓ 第一次表達感謝就夠了，後面進入真實對話。

5.3 英文卡頓不敢說

台灣學生最大缺點：怕說錯英文 → 用沉默逃避。

處理方式：

• 「Let me think about that for a second...」（爭取思考時間）
• 「Sorry, I lost my thought—let me restart.」（坦白承認）
• 「I'm not sure I understood the question. Could you rephrase?」（誠實提問）

真相：Alumni 不期待你英文完美——他期待你真誠、有想法。

5.4 把每個答案都套版

「This is a great question...」「I think the most important thing is...」每題都套這板模 → 機器人。

真相：好的面試是「像聊天一樣」。讓對話自然流動。

5.5 過度緊張、不笑

台灣文化偏正式，面試容易過於緊繃。Alumni 期待你「像同學一樣」聊天——可以微笑、可以開玩笑（適度）、可以分享你的困惑。

六、AO Interview：頂尖學校的少數機會

AO Interview 由實際招生官親自面試，極少見——只有 MIT、Caltech、UPenn Wharton 等校少數情境。

AO Interview 比 alumni 更深入學術。準備 3 個額外項目：

1. 論文 / 書籍：能流暢談 2-3 本你看過的書
2. 時事討論：能流暢談 1-2 個你關心的新聞議題
3. 未來 vision：「畢業後 10 年你想做什麼」——具體計畫

七、InitialView / Vericant 第三方影音面試

部分學校（Yale、Carnegie Mellon、UChicago 等）要求國際生上傳第三方面試。

7.1 兩家服務的差異

兩個服務本質相同：第三方驗證你的口說 + 邏輯。

7.2 InitialView 流程

1. 報名 + 排場：3-4 週前
2. 面試：25 分鐘

• 5 分鐘自我介紹
• 15 分鐘對話（問題類似 alumni interview）
• 5 分鐘短文寫作（unscripted、現場手寫）

3. 錄影 + 評語：3-5 天後給你 review
4. 上傳到學校：你決定是否送

7.3 是否要做 InitialView？

八、面試後的跟進

面試結束後 24 小時內 寄感謝信。

8.1 感謝信範本

重點：

• 提到具體談論的話題（證明你有認真聽）
• 提到他/她的具體 insight（證明你尊重）
• 24 小時內寄出

8.2 不要再過度跟進

寄完感謝信後不要再追問。Alumni 不會告訴你「面試結果」——他只會交 report 給 AO。

九、面試 dress code

9.1 男生

• 卡其褲 / 西裝褲 + 襯衫 + 毛衣 / 西外（依場合）
• ❌ 不要：T-shirt、短褲、拖鞋、運動鞋（除非設計感強的）

9.2 女生

• 西裝裙 / 西裝褲 / 長裙 + 襯衫 / 針織 + 平底鞋
• ❌ 不要：太短裙、低胸、運動鞋（除非設計感強的）

9.3 線上面試

• 上半身穿正式服裝
• 背景乾淨：白牆或書架
• 打光：自然光從正面（不要背光）
• 網路穩定：用有線網路或好的 WiFi

十、面試後 4 種可能結果

真相：面試很少是「決定性」因素——它是「驗證 + 微調」工具。除非你面試表現極差（如完全不出席、講不清楚），否則它不會「毀掉你的申請」。

十一、台灣學生面試 3 大實戰建議

11.1 用「故事庫」備戰

預先準備 8-10 個「口袋故事」——每個故事 60 秒可以講清楚。面試時根據問題抽取對應故事。

11.2 模擬面試 5 次

11.3 「You don't need to perform」

最後給 Dr. G. 學生的提醒：Alumni 不期待你「表演」——他期待你「呈現真實的自己」。

如果某個問題你不知道怎麼答：

• 「That's a really hard question. Let me think...」
• 「I don't have a clear answer yet, but I'm working on it.」
• 「Honestly, I'm not sure—but here's how I'd approach it.」

坦誠 > 完美。

十二、結語：面試是聊天、不是考試

15 年來我看過太多家長把面試當「最後一關決勝負」——其實面試的影響不超過 10%。真正決勝負的還是 PS、Activities、GPA、SAT。

我給 Dr. G. 學生的最後叮嚀：

Alumni 期待見到「未來的同學」，不是「完美的申請者」。讓對話自然進行、分享你真心熱愛的東西、問他 / 她有 insight 的問題——這就夠了。

緊張是正常的。但記得：Alumni 也只是一位普通人，30 分鐘後你們就再也不會見面。放輕鬆，做自己。
