Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU): Formerly Ryerson, Frontline Journalism + Media + Business, an Urban Campus in Downtown Toronto

A practical guide to TMU for international families: downtown Toronto campus, journalism, media, business, law, Co-op, costs, admissions, and Canadian immigration pathways.
Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU): Formerly Ryerson, Frontline Journalism + Media + Business, an Urban Campus in Downtown Toronto
Published on May 14, 2026
Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU, formerly Ryerson University) is not a U15 university, and it sits at #800-850 in QS. But it is one of the few comprehensive universities on earth where “downtown urban campus” literally means next to Yonge-Dundas Square. If your child wants journalism / media / business / law, downtown Toronto resources + applied Co-op + the OINP Masters Stream immigration pathway, TMU is another Toronto urban option outside UToronto: about 30% cheaper in tuition, more admission-friendly, and with comparable internship access.
To understand TMU, remember three things first. First, TMU changed its name from Ryerson in 2022. Because Egerton Ryerson, a 19th-century Ontario education minister, had historical ties to the Indian residential school system, the campus statue of Egerton Ryerson was toppled in 2021, and in 2022 the university fully moved away from the Ryerson name, becoming Toronto Metropolitan University. TMU is the first Canadian university to completely remove its former institutional name, including from its alumni association branding. Second, the School of Journalism is tied with Carleton for first in Canada. CBC, CTV, Global News, The Globe and Mail, and the Toronto Star all draw heavily from this talent pipeline; the two major sources of Canadian journalists are Ryerson / TMU and Carleton. Third, TMU describes itself as a “career-ready university”. It emphasizes internships, Co-op, and industry integration. The Creative School includes RTA Media + Image Arts + Performance + Fashion; Ted Rogers School of Management is the third-largest business school in Canada by scale; and Lincoln Alexander Law is a new law school launched in 2020, with more than 1,000 applications in its first admissions cycle.
The campus is right next to Yonge-Dundas Square, Canada’s version of Times Square. The Mattamy Athletic Centre was converted from Maple Leaf Gardens, Canada’s oldest NHL arena, built in 1931. If your child wants a “downtown Toronto urban campus + journalism / media / business / law + applied Co-op + tuition 30% lower than UToronto + OINP Masters Stream PR,” TMU is Toronto’s second option, behind only UToronto.

6. Campus Culture / Institutional Personality
TMU’s campus culture can be summarized in one sentence: downtown Toronto + applied learning + diverse urban environment + post-Ryerson transition period. There is no traditional enclosed campus. TMU’s main campus sits beside Yonge-Dundas Square, across from Eaton Centre, and about a 15-minute walk from Bay Street investment banks. The student body is highly diverse, reflecting Toronto’s population, with active Indian, Chinese, Caribbean, Eastern European, and Filipino communities.
Campus Legends
Yonge-Dundas Square is effectively the front gate: Canada’s version of Times Square, with millions of visitors every year. TMU students commute through it daily.
Mattamy Athletic Centre was converted from Maple Leaf Gardens, Canada’s oldest NHL arena: built in 1931, it was the home of the Toronto Maple Leafs from 1931 to 1999. TMU acquired and renovated it in 2009 into an athletic centre plus a Loblaws supermarket. Its lower level sits on NHL history.
TMU is the first Canadian university to fully remove its former name, including the “Ryerson” alumni association brand: after the 2022 name change, the university crest, website, alumni association, and diplomas all moved away from Ryerson. The Egerton Ryerson statue was toppled during campus protests in 2021 and was not rebuilt.
Bold varsity teams: TMU’s varsity teams are called the Bold (formerly the Rams, renamed together with the university in 2022)
The Creative School corridors: fashion / photography / theatre students move through the buildings, with an atmosphere like a blend of New York’s Parsons and NYU Tisch
Student Clubs
250+ clubs
TMSU (TMU Students' Union) is the student union
Among international student communities, Indian, Chinese, and Filipino groups are the largest
The Taiwanese student association is mid-sized and interacts with Taiwanese communities at UToronto and York
Nightlife around Yonge-Dundas Square: Eaton Centre, Toronto Eaton Centre Cineplex, and the Toronto Theatre District are all within walking distance
Sports Culture
Varsity teams are called the Bold (formerly the Rams before the 2022 renaming)
Main sports: men’s and women’s basketball, hockey, soccer, volleyball
OUA (Ontario University Athletics) conference
Sports culture is moderate. TMU is not a strong school-spirit campus, but basketball games at Mattamy Athletic Centre have a good atmosphere
7. Location / Campus Environment
City Positioning
Toronto is Canada’s largest city, with a population of 2.9 million in the city and 6.5 million in the greater metropolitan area. It is Canada’s financial, tech, media, and cultural center. TMU sits in the heart of downtown Toronto: Yonge-Dundas Square, Eaton Centre, the Toronto Theatre District, and Bay Street are all within a 15-minute walk.
Compared with UToronto’s St. George campus, UToronto is beside Queen’s Park in the northern part of downtown around University Avenue. TMU is closer to the downtown commercial core than UToronto. Yonge-Dundas Square is Toronto’s true “downtown heart,” while UToronto is the “academic district in the north of downtown.”
TMU has no traditional enclosed campus. Academic buildings are spread across the Yonge / Dundas / Church / Gerrard area, and students move through the city between classes. The campus is surrounded by Dundas, College, and Queen subway stations, with TTC connections across the city.
Climate
Winter: -10°C to -5°C, with frequent snow from January to March (same as UToronto)
Summer: 22-28°C, humid but pleasant
Spring and fall: short, with spectacular maple leaves
Campus Landmarks
Sheldon & Tracy Levy Student Learning Centre: opened in 2015, TMU’s signature building, with a crystal-like exterior
Mattamy Athletic Centre: former Maple Leaf Gardens (1931), renovated in 2009
Ted Rogers School of Management: main business school building
Yonge-Dundas Square (at the campus entrance, 5-minute walk)
Eaton Centre (5-minute walk)
8. Research and Resources
Library
1 main library + multiple Faculty libraries, with 1 million volumes
TMU Library is the main library and was expanded in 2010
Notable Research Centers
TMU Centre for Urban Research and Land Development (CUR): urban planning research
TMU Diversity Institute: diversity and equity research
TMU Brookfield Institute for Innovation + Entrepreneurship: entrepreneurship and innovation research
TMU AI Labs: partial collaboration with Vector Institute
9. Notable Alumni

Sports: Kawhi Leonard (NBA superstar, 2018-2019 Toronto Raptors championship player, briefly attended BBA)
Journalism: many CBC, CTV, Global News, and Toronto Star journalists
Creative / Fashion: Kim Cattrall (Sex and the City actor, briefly studied theatre), Sarah Polley (actor + director)
TMU’s alumni network is concentrated in Canadian media, journalism, creative industries, and Toronto business, making it one of the cultural hearts of Toronto.
10. TMU Facts You May Not Know
TMU changed its name in 2022: Egerton Ryerson (1803-1882), Ontario’s education minister, was criticized for having “designed the Indian residential school system,” which later caused cultural destruction and trauma for Indigenous children. In 2021, the campus statue of Egerton Ryerson was toppled by protesters. In 2022, the university fully moved away from the Ryerson name and became Toronto Metropolitan University. TMU is the first Canadian university to completely remove both its institutional name and alumni association brand.
Mattamy Athletic Centre was converted from Canada’s oldest NHL arena: originally Maple Leaf Gardens, built in 1931, it was home to the Toronto Maple Leafs from 1931 to 1999. After the team moved to Scotiabank Arena in 1999, Maple Leaf Gardens sat unused. In 2009, TMU and Loblaws jointly acquired and renovated it, with a Loblaws supermarket on the lower level and TMU athletic facilities above. The arena foundation preserves the original NHL site.
Lincoln Alexander Law is Canada’s first law school named after a Black Canadian: it honors Lincoln Alexander (1922-2012), Canada’s first Black federal Member of Parliament and first Black Lieutenant Governor / Ontario Lieutenant Governor. It was founded in 2020 and received more than 1,000 applications in its first admissions cycle.
TMU School of Journalism is tied with Carleton for first in Canada: CBC, CTV, Global News, Toronto Star, and The Globe and Mail all draw heavily from it. The two major pipelines into Canadian journalism are Ryerson / TMU in Toronto and Carleton in Ottawa.
Ted Rogers School of Management is the third-largest business school in Canada by scale: 9,000+ students, behind only York Schulich (11,000+) and UToronto Rotman (about 10,000 including PhD). It is AACSB accredited and offers BCom + MBA + PhD programs. The Ted Rogers MBA is one of the main urban MBA options in Toronto.
11. Typical Admitted Student Profile
High school average after conversion: 80-88%+ (IB 28+, A-Level BBB+, top 35% of a Taiwanese high school)
SAT 1180+ (1300+ recommended for Ted Rogers)
IELTS 6.5+ / TOEFL 92+
Ted Rogers BCom recommendation: business logic, stable quantitative ability, and entrepreneurial / leadership experience as a plus
School of Image Arts recommendation: strong portfolio in photography / short film / design
School of Journalism recommendation: writing sample + interview experience + strong essay
Lincoln Alexander Law recommendation: JD applicants need an undergraduate degree + LSAT 158+ + diversity statement
TMU is friendly to Taiwanese IB / A-Level / top 35% high school students. Among Toronto urban options, it is a comprehensive university with a relatively accessible admissions threshold
12. What Kind of Student Is It Best For?
✓ Good fit for:
Students who want journalism, media, communications, business (Ted Rogers), creative fields (The Creative School), or law (Lincoln Alexander Law)
Students who want a downtown Toronto urban campus, applied Co-op, and industry integration
Families with a budget of CAD 50-65K/year (about 30% cheaper than UToronto)
Families planning to stay in Canada after graduation and able to move quickly when OINP Masters Stream quotas open and fill within hours
Students who like diverse cities, Bay Street business culture, and theatre / fashion / media circles
Students seeking many internship / Co-op opportunities and exposure to Toronto Tech / finance / media internships
✗ Not necessarily a good fit for:
Students who want the prestige halo of U15 / QS Top 100 credentials (TMU is QS #800-850)
Students who must have a traditional university campus and green campus experience (TMU has no traditional enclosed campus)
Students who want a close-knit small community where professors know them by name (TMU has large classes and 46,000 students)
Students who dislike urban campuses and noisy environments
Families with a very tight budget of CAD 30-40K/year; Memorial / UNB / Dal are more budget-friendly
Students who want top-tier pure STEM / Engineering or a PhD-track path; UToronto / Waterloo / McMaster are better recommendations
13. Canadian Study + Immigration Pathway Advantages
TMU’s value in Canadian immigration pathways is concentrated in the OINP Masters Stream. Its downtown Toronto campus is also commuter-friendly for OINP-related job searching, but Ontario’s 50% international student cap cut is a major disadvantage.
PGWP (Post-Graduation Work Permit)
After completing a TMU degree program of at least 8 months, graduates may apply for a 3-year Open Work Permit, regardless of major. The PGWP reforms that took effect on 2024-11-01 remain relatively flexible for university degrees. Language requirement: IELTS General CLB 7 (6.0 in each band); Taiwanese students usually meet this with IELTS 7.0.
Ontario’s Provincial Nominee Program has a Masters Graduate Stream specifically for master’s graduates:
TMU master’s graduates are eligible to apply (Ted Rogers MBA and master’s programs across Faculties)
No job offer required (one of the most flexible streams, alongside BC)
Once a provincial nomination is granted, CRS is automatically +600 points, effectively guaranteeing an ITA
TMU urban campus + downtown Toronto = OINP commute-friendly: after finishing a master’s degree, graduates can look for jobs directly in Toronto Tech / Bay Street, with advantages in both distance and network
Downside: quotas fill within hours. Since 2024, intake has opened every 1-2 months, and each round fills within a few hours
From 2025, quotas were cut in half (55,000 across all provincial streams), so applicants must be ready to submit immediately once eligible
Express Entry / CEC
TMU graduates can use EE / CEC:
2026 Q1 CEC cut-off was about 521-547 in general rounds
STEM category 481-524; French category 379-428
TMU Ted Rogers / Engineering graduate, age 24 + 1 year of Toronto work experience + IELTS 7.0: CRS around 500-530
Impact of the 2024-2025 International Student Cap: TMU’s Biggest Disadvantage
Ontario is the province hit hardest by the 2024-2025 international student cap:
Study permit allocations cut by 50% in 2024, then cut another 15% in 2025
As an applied university rather than a research-intensive institution like UToronto, TMU’s undergraduate and course-based master’s programs are directly affected by the cap
PAL documents are highly competitive
Some TMU programs saw clear enrollment reductions in 2024-2025
Recommended strategy:
Prioritize TMU master’s programs (research-based master’s programs are relatively more protected)
Apply as early as possible (cap allocations are first-come, first-served)
Prepare PAL documentation (allocated by the Ontario government)
Backup plan: if TMU rejects the application, consider York Schulich or Carleton (Ottawa, but still within Ontario’s cap)
Impact of the Name Change Controversy
After the 2022 name change, the brand is still rebuilding, and international recognition still often centers on Ryerson:
International employers in the United States / Europe are more familiar with Ryerson, while TMU recognition is still developing
Local Toronto employers / the Canadian job market have fully accepted the TMU name
Diplomas, credential verification, and Canadian PR applications all use the TMU name for graduates after 2022
In the short term, if planning to work in Taiwan / the United States, it is recommended to list “Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University)” on resumes and LinkedIn

TMU’s four-part advantage of “downtown Toronto campus + strengths in journalism / media / business / law + OINP Masters Stream + tuition 30% lower than UToronto” makes it the most pragmatic choice outside UToronto among Toronto urban options.
Conclusion
TMU fits Taiwanese families who say, “I want journalism / media / business / law + downtown Toronto urban resources + OINP Masters Stream PR + a budget 30% lower than UToronto.” It is not UToronto with “U15 + QS #29 + Canada’s best university”, nor is it York Schulich with “top business school + a northern Toronto suburban campus.” It is more like Canada’s version of NYU Tisch + Boston University COM: a downtown urban campus, applied orientation, strengths in media and business, and strong Co-op and industry integration.
Choosing TMU means accepting several things. First, Ontario’s 50% international student cap cut is a major disadvantage from 2024 to 2026, increasing admissions competition and making PAL documents harder to obtain. Second, the 2022 Ryerson to TMU name change is still in its brand-rebuilding period, with lower international recognition than the former Ryerson name. Third, TMU is not U15 / QS Top 300. If you want prestige, choose UToronto / McGill / UBC.
But if your child executes well, the path can look like this: age 18-22 at TMU in Ted Rogers BCom / School of Journalism / The Creative School; 4 years of Co-op building 4-5 downtown Toronto industry internships; graduation at 22 with an offer from Bay Street / Bell Media / CBC; OINP Masters Stream if pursuing a master’s, or EE CEC; Canadian permanent residence and a downtown Toronto career by age 25. This is one of the few closed-loop paths on earth for “downtown Toronto urban campus + applied learning + Co-op + Canadian PR by age 25”, at 30% less than UToronto and 70% less than NYU in the United States.
TMU is not UToronto, but among Toronto’s second-tier downtown options, it is the most affordable, most applied, and most media / business-oriented choice. The name-change controversy is still in transition, but the local Toronto employment market has fully accepted it. For Taiwanese families pursuing an urban career path, not obsessed with QS ranking, and willing to take the OINP quota risk, TMU is a high-value Toronto urban choice.
