Every year, parents ask me: "Teacher, Singapore NUS / NTU seem very generous to Taiwanese international students, but I heard there is a "3-6 year bond". What exactly is that?**"
My answer is always: "A "Bond" is the Singapore government's "return clause" for international student scholarships. After receiving the scholarship, you must work in Singapore for 3-6 years after graduation. Breach it = repay the scholarship + pay a penalty."
Parents then become even more anxious: "So is it worth it?"
The answer is: For students who "want to stay in Singapore / enter international finance / pursue PR," it is extremely cost-effective. This article uses my 15 years of hands-on experience to break down the scholarship + bond logic at Singapore's three major universities.
University | Global Ranking (QS 2024) | Strengths |
|---|---|---|
NUS (National University of Singapore) | 8 | All fields, strong Engineering |
NTU (Nanyang Technological University) | 26 | Engineering, Business |
SMU (Singapore Management University) | 511-520 | Business (one of Asia's top business schools) |
Key point for Taiwanese students: NUS, NTU, and SMU all offer international scholarships.
University | International Student Tuition / Year (SGD) | USD Equivalent |
|---|---|---|
NUS | SGD $39,000-50,000 | $29K-37K |
NTU | SGD $38,000-46,000 | $28K-34K |
SMU | SGD $42,000-55,000 | $31K-41K |
Conclusion: A self-funded 4-year degree costs around USD $110K-150K (NTD 3.6-5 million), about 50% cheaper than the United States.
Scholarship | Target Students | Bond |
|---|---|---|
NUS / NTU Tuition Grant | All international students | 3 years of work in SG |
NUS / NTU ASEAN Scholarship | ASEAN students (including Taiwan? See note below) | 6 years of work in SG |
⚠ Important: Taiwan is not considered ASEAN, so Taiwanese students cannot apply for the ASEAN Scholarship. However, they can apply for the NUS / NTU Tuition Grant.

The bond is not a "punishment". It is a "guaranteed employment path".

Truth: For students who "want to stay in SG," the bond is not a burden at all. It is a "guaranteed employment path + PR route."

-> The bond means "the Singapore government is investing in you." They hope you will stay.
-> Apply for PR one year before the bond ends. Most cases can succeed.
-> Applying for SG PR may require giving up Taiwanese citizenship / dual citizenship may not be allowed (depending on policy at the time).
-> The 3-6 year bond is a golden period of "high starting salary + strong multinational networking."
-> 5-hour flight + many SG companies have TW offices, so there are many opportunities to return to Taiwan.
Over the past 15 years, I have seen too many Taiwanese families panic as soon as they hear "3-year bond." But for students who "genuinely want to stay in Asia," this bond is "the sweetest deal."
My final reminder for Dr. G. students:
Studying in SG is suitable for students who:1. Want to stay in Asia (not the U.S. / Europe)2. Want to enter international finance / multinational tech companies3. Want to fast-track PR (5-6 years)4. Are interested in "multicultural SG"5. Are academically strong + want a global Top 10 ranked university
Real ROI:- 4 years at USD $50K-80K (using the Tuition Grant)- + 3-6 years of SG bond work worth USD $200K-350K- + SG PR- + diverse Asian / Western networking
SG is "a microcosm of Asia + a global hub", with one of the world's top 3 ROIs for the right student profile.
